A History of Decision Matrix Systems.
Decision Matrix Systems was founded to formalise and extend a decision methodology developed over two decades of work in complex mining and resource systems.
The approach combines Geology, mining engineering, metallurgy, economic modelling, and structured decision analysis to support strategic decisions across mining projects.
Origins of the Decision Matrix Methodology.
The conceptual foundations of the Decision Matrix methodology emerged from work on large-scale copper mining projects in South America, supporting open pit and block caving expansions that required complex capital allocation decisions under significant operational and financial constraints.
During the early 2000s, elements of the methodology were further examined and refined in Canada during a period of research. Early forms of integrated mine planning and processing optimisation frameworks found their footing.
From the late 2000s onwards, DMS was deployed at scale within a major mining firm's iron ore division, with practical experience across major mining operations and strategic planning environments. Over time, the framework expanded beyond operational optimisation to incorporate capital allocation, market conditions, and long-term commodity strategy.
By the early 2020s, the Decision Matrix methodology had matured into a comprehensive decision-support framework capable of aligning orebody knowledge, processing strategies, market intelligence, and resource access considerations in long-term mining strategies.
After being released from exclusivity in 2025, the Decision Matrix System, reflecting the accumulated professional experience of its creators, was redeveloped in a new programming language and substantially expanded beyond its initial inception to new commodity markets, including: Gold, Lithium, Cobalt, select rare earth elements (REEs), Nickel, Zinc, Silver.
The new architecture was built independently from first principles, drawing on publicly available, research, operational experience across the mining industry and advances in computational modelling. This redevelopment has resulted in the creation of a truly independent and comprehensive decision-support platform for the mining industry.
While the foundational ideas emerged from years of experience in mine planning and resource economics, this current platforms represents a distinct generation of Decision Matrix: rebuilt, modernised and engineered for the next era of data-driven decisions in the mining sector.

First applications took place in Chile before arriving to Canada, Australia and Guinea.

What's the future for Decision Matrix Systems?
Enabling More Competitive Mining Ventures.
One of the long-term objectives of DMS is to lower the analytical barriers to entering the mining industry. Large mining projects historically and continue to require significant organisational infrastructure and internal modelling capabilities. By using DMS, smaller and agile teams can evaluate resource opportunities with the same analytical rigour previously available only to large organisations
Improving Decision Discipline in Resource Development.
DMS is designed to bring transparency and structure to choices typically blurry by vision creep regarding the complex trade-offs between geology, engineering constraints, capital investment, and market conditions. By evaluating more development pathways, DMS helps identify projects that are viable - and those that are not. We want to ensure that only projects with clear technical and economic justification move forward, reducing unnecessary development and improving capital discipline across the sector.
A Shared Decision Platform for the Mining industry.
Over time, Decision Matrix Systems aims to evolve into a platform that can be licensed to operators, project developers and resource investors, and business analysts as software. Industry participants would be able to evaluate development strategies more quickly, compare project alternatives systematically and improve transparency in capital allocation decisions.
The goal of DMS is not just to analyse mining projects, but to change the industry for the better by enabling faster, better decisions about developing the world's finite mineral resources.
